FAQ
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is awareness of the present moment. Having complete attention on your experience in the moment in an open and non-judgemental way. Not agonising over the past, worrying about the future, or running away with your thoughts. It is about being in connection with what's happening for you in the here and now. Noticing what's going on inside and out. It is a calm, neutral state of being which has been clinically proven to help mental health.
Can young children really do yoga?
Yes! Children are natural yogis. They live in the now, and often pull adult's attention back into the present moment. They love to explore, bend and move their bodies. Tippy Toes structures classes to suit different age groups. The youngest children are free to roam and do not have to be still and quiet on their mats. It is an interactive, playful and responsive class. Children are engaged by exciting yoga adventure stories, as well as props, puppets, sensory resources, music and singing.
What do children get out of doing yoga?
Yoga helps children to relax inside their bodies, develop spatial awareness and balance, reduce anxiety, and increase concentration. Mindfulness helps children to grow in awareness of themselves and others, builds emotional intelligence, and gives them an important toolbox to navigate life more easily. The class will encourage interaction with others, build trust, boost mood and self-esteem and help to improve sleep as well.
What do I need to wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing such as jogging bottoms and T-shirt. Bare feet are best or grippy slipper socks if preferred. Try not to dress your children in tights as these can take time to remove.
What do I need to bring to class?
Just a bottle of water. We provide everything you need from mats, resources, and music to hot drinks, snacks and treats.
What does a typical class involve?
Classes are interactive, playful, and responsive to children's needs. The structure varies depending on age group but usually includes a hello circle, breath work, a warm up dance, yoga poses that flow to create an adventure story, games, sensory play, visualisation, positive affirmations, and relaxation. Our community classes finish with a snack time when parents can grab a cuppa, a treat, and unwind. It's fun exercise in a supportive environment. Adults can join in with the yoga as much as they like. Tippy Toes uses movement, stillness, and the breath to inspire self-regulation and positivity as well as good physical health.
Can I try a class before booking a block of classes?
Absolutely. Book a trial class by emailing Emma at tippytoesyoga@gmail.com or book onto one of our taster days and give us a try.
My child has additional needs. Can we attend? Is the class suitable?
Absolutely. Your child has a lot to gain from attending our classes. I am fully trained in teaching yoga to children with additional needs and can adapt poses accordingly. I create a safe and welcoming space and work with the family to accommodate their needs. I will discuss with you prior to the class what you would like to get out of it and what additional support you would like provided.
I have a medical need /am pregnant / have recently had a baby. Can I join in with the class?
Everyone who comes to a Tippy Toes class loves to join in. If you are not used to regular exercise then listen to your body and take it carefully. If you are pregnant then wait until after 16 weeks to join in with the yoga part of class and if you have just had your baby you are more than welcome to join in after you have had your 6 or 8 week check. I am fully trained in which yoga poses are safe during pregnancy and post-natally so I can adapt the yoga routine for mummies and can give you tips for getting those pelvic floors strong. Baby siblings are welcome to join the class for free. Other medical needs will need advice from a doctor. You should not experience any pain or discomfort during the yoga practice and you should stop immediately if you do.
